Nhưng tất cả đã thay đổi vào tối chủ nhật 25/4/2021 (giờ Hoa Kỳ), với việc Chloé Zhao mang về giải thưởng Viện Hàn lâm cho Nomadland được giới phê bình đánh giá cao, miêu tả một phụ nữ ở độ tuổi 60 (do Frances McDormand thủ vai) băng xuyên miền Tây nước Mỹ sống đời du mục trên xe van. (Cũng lần đầu tiên có một nữ đạo diễn khác, Emerald Fennell, được đề cử ở hạng mục này trong cùng năm).

Chiến thắng của đạo diễn người Trung Quốc là sự công nhận sức tác động của phụ nữ châu Á đối với ngành công nghiệp giải trí — một điều đã thể hiện xuyên suốt lịch sử điện ảnh.

Youn Yuh Jung đã thắng giải nữ diễn viên phụ xuất sắc nhất cho vai diễn trong Minari và trở thành nữ diễn viên Hàn Quốc đầu tiên chiến thắng ở hạng mục đó.

Trong phát biểu nhận giải, Youn đã nói bà nghĩ sẽ xem lễ trao giải Oscar ở quê nhà ở Hàn Quốc và thật là một trải nghiệm siêu thực khi có mặt tại buổi lễ.

“Tôi ở đây một mình, không thể tin rằng tôi đang ở đây ... để tôi kiềm chế một chút. Cảm ơn Viện Hàn lâm,” bà nói.
